Functional Capacity Evaluation Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

Functional Capacity Evaluation

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is an objective assessment that measures a client’s physical capabilities and tolerances.

Functional capacity evaluations are generally requested by Worker’s compensation boards, insurance companies, employers or lawyers.

At PhysioPlus we use The Matheson System of evaluation. The Matheson System is a “Best Practice” model for Functional Capacity Evaluation. The focus of the evaluation is to answer case resolution relevant questions for the referral source. Our clinic is fully equipped with up-to-date testing equipment to perform valid, reliable, and standardized evaluations.

Components of a Functional Capacity Evaluation:

The evaluation consists of a combination of musculoskeletal examination, work simulation, clinical observation, and standardized and non-standardized evaluations to determine the individual’s capacity to perform any of the following:

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling capacity
  • Reaching, handling and fine motor manipulation
  • Hand strength and dexterity
  • Medium and fine motor dexterity
  • Climbing and balancing
  • Sitting, standing and walking
  • Work in various awkward body postures (stooping, kneeling, crouching, and bending).

After completion of an FCE, a comprehensive, clear report will be submitted to the appropriate parties who have requested the FCE. The report will address the referral source’s questions and can include subjective and objective findings, test results, a summary of the participants abilities and limitations, comparison between job demands and physical ability, as well as the evaluator’s recommendations for return to work or future rehabilitation.

What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation used for?

FCE’s are a useful tool in the medical, insurance, legal, worker’s compensation and vocational rehabilitation communities. The referral source questions will direct the goals of the evaluation with view to the following outcomes:

  • Identifies an individuals abilities and limitations.
  • Establishes whether an individual can meet the physical requirements of his/her job.
  • Determines safe parameters for re-entering the work force and minimizes risk of re-injury through identifying work restrictions.
  • Provides objective information for disability settlements.
  • Recommends rehabilitation intervention to assist in recovery and return to work.
  • The FCE’s value to the injured individual is the focus on functional ability instead of the pain limitation associated with an impairment.

How long is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

The length of our FCE testing is a 1-day evaluation of 6-8 hours, with a follow up interview the next day. A 1-day test allows for a balance of comprehensive physical testing and provision for a trained evaluator to make better comments regarding an individual’s full day capacity.
