Physical Performance

Athletic Therapy

Athletic Therapy includes the prevention, immediate care and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries. Athletic therapists are certified and governed by the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association (CATA).

Their training includes musculoskeletal and postural evaluation, equipment selection, fitting and repair, proper warm ups and conditioning programs, prophylactic and supportive taping and adapting activities to the environment and facilities.

Athletic therapists are also trained in on-field injury assessment, basic emergency life support, recognition and management of acute traumatic neurological dysfunction, provision of first aid and preparation for transport to appropriate health care delivery systems or where appropriate, facilitating safe return to play.

Another important aspect of athletic therapy is the rehabilitation of injuries. This includes the use of contemporary rehabilitative techniques, to promote an environment conducive to optimal healing and prepare the individual for a safe reintegration to an active lifestyle.
Financial coverage for athletic therapy varies amongst insurance companies and sports bodies so it is important to check with your extended helath provider or sport governing body to see if you are covered for this type of treatment.
